GranBio holds a stake in the American clean technology company American Process Inc., or API. With the deal, the company gained engineering know-how and access to a proprietary biomass pretreatment platform that makes it possible to develop sugar from cellulose at low cost, as a raw material for producing a large variety of renewables.
Founded in 1995, API assumed a position of leadership in the biofuels market by producing cellulosic ethanol at its pilot plant for the first time, in 2013.
Its team has 16 PhDs, and it has filed to register more than 120 patents. It is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. It also has two technology demonstration plants, one in Thomaston, Georgia and the other in Alpena, Michigan.
