Research center

Inaugurated in 2013, GranBio’s Synthetic Biology Research Center in the Techno Park complex in Campinas is focused on genetic improvement of microorganisms, biomass processing, and developing processes for fermentation and enzymatic hydrolysis.   The team has more than 20 scientists, including 11 with PhDs.

Unusually for the sector, the Center is multidisciplinary, at all points in the chain of production – from the field, with the genetic mapping of sugarcane and studies of its chemical composition, to the industry, with the development of processes for converting cellulosic sugar into renewable products.

In addition to proprietary technologies, the scientific center co-develops partners’ technologies.  It also functions like radar in identifying and testing the best available industrial processing technologies in the world for producing biochemicals and biofuels – including those that are still in initial stages of development, but that have enormous break-through potential.

The center enjoys support and financing from the Finep - Agência Brasileira de Inovação.
