Cellulose

The most abundant organic molecule on Earth, cellulose is a polymer made up of monomers of glucose (C6). It is, together with hemicellulose (C5 and C6 sugars), the main component of the cellular wall of plants. After hydrolysis, the glucose derived from the cellulose becomes one of the most important substrates in the production of second-generation ethanol. Currently, the molecule is used to produce paper, fibers and other chemical products such as plastics, adhesives, food thickeners and rayon.
